Pilot project for the naturalization and climate adaptation of schoolyards

Patis a la Fresca (Cool Schoolyards)
The naturalization of schoolyards is a growing demand from educational centers. Moreover, in our current climate emergency, it is a necessity. In this context, the Alt Empordà County Council launched a pilot project in 2022 to study the climate adaptation of schoolyards. Based on microclimatic analysis and the participation of the educational community, the goal was to define a replicable modular solution and a phased implementation process over time. This resulted in a series of interventions aimed at improving the hygrothermal comfort of the space through the planting of vegetation, the improvement of pavement permeability, and the installation of shading structures.
Furthermore, during the drafting of the final projects, a drought emergency was declared, requiring the implementation of water collection and storage systems to ensure the establishment of the vegetation during its early years. The species selection, which followed ecoclimatic criteria, had to be adapted in accordance with the Design Criteria Manual of the Department of Education.
Ultimately, the schoolyards in Llers and Peralada were successfully executed thanks to subsidies granted to local entities in Catalonia for the development of climate change mitigation and adaptation interventions. The result is a collaborative effort among public initiative, the community, designers, and the administration: "Habemus Pati!" (We have a schoolyard!).
